Kaymakli and Derinkuyu are two of the best-known and largest underground cities in Cappadocia. Although both are impressive, they offer noticeably different experiences. Kaymakli spreads across a wider, more horizontal layout, so the visit often feels calmer, more open and easier to follow. Derinkuyu descends much deeper underground and includes more stairs, narrow tunnels and vertical transitions, creating a more intense and adventurous experience. For most first-time visitors, families and travellers who feel uncomfortable in confined spaces, Kaymakli is usually the easier choice. Derinkuyu may be more suitable for those who want to explore deeper levels and do not mind steep steps or tighter passages. Their entrance fees and overall experience are quite similar, so visiting one is generally enough for a typical Cappadocia itinerary unless you have a particular interest in underground settlements. During the visit, you will need to bend and pass through low, narrow tunnels. Comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and closed-toe, non-slip shoes are recommended. Both underground cities are beautiful in their own way, but I personally prefer Kaymakli because it is usually quieter and more comfortable to explore.
